Cosmic Bloom is a lotus-shaped jewel that became the first piece of fine jewellery to travel to space.

The jewel travelled aboard Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 rocket on July 18, 2026. The rocket launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and reached Low Earth Orbit at 453 km in just 16 minutes. This launch made India the third country after the US and China to have a private company launch a rocket into orbit. Skyroot Aerospace, the company behind Vikram-1, is based in Bangalore.

Nityas, based in Surat, manufactured the diamonds for Cosmic Bloom for Cosmos Diamonds, a Bengaluru-based retailer founded by Sanjana Tripuramallu. They designed the piece and brought it to market. The lotus-shaped piece features 32 lab-grown diamonds set in 14k yellow gold, with a total weight of 16.95 carats.

SGL Labs certified every stone in the piece in India under Report No. SGLSTJM428518C. The report confirmed the diamonds were lab-grown and graded them as Color E-F and Clarity VVS-VS. The report lists a gross weight of 11.80 grams. It also lists 24 pear-shaped centre stones weighing 16.16 carats and 8 pear-shaped side stones weighing 0.79 carats, all cut in the pear shape.

Before the flight, the jewel went through structural, vibration, and G-force tests to meet spaceflight standards. It then received technical clearance from Skyroot Aerospace and IN-SPACE, India’s space sector regulator. Custom aluminium fittings and gold replicas of rocket screws kept the lotus in place during liftoff. Cosmic Bloom was one of six payloads carried by Vikram-1. The mission also carried an Earth observation satellite, a solar research CubeSat, a robotic arm for capturing space debris, and two technology demonstrators.

The lotus was chosen as the design’s centrepiece because as simple as the design may look, it holds a special place in Indians through art, architecture, and spirituality. It reflects India’s cultural heritage while marking a milestone for the country’s space and diamond industries. Cosmos Diamonds said it will launch the wider Lotus Collection, inspired by Cosmic Bloom, at its HSR Layout store in Bengaluru.

Every diamond certified by SGL, whether natural or lab grown, goes through the same stringent grading standards used for Cosmic Bloom.
