The Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ), an initiative of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the India Centre for Lab Grown Diamond (InCent-LGD) at IIT Madras on 20 February 2026 to strengthen India’s laboratory-grown diamond (LGD) education and skill ecosystem.
The LoI was signed by Debasish Biswas (right), CEO, IIGJ, and Prof. M.S. Ramachandra Rao (left), Head, InCent-LGD, IIT Madras. The collaboration will focus on developing joint certification and diploma programmes in LGD technology, integrating industry-oriented training with research-driven academic inputs.
The proposed certification programme will cover HPHT and CVD production technologies, post-processing techniques, grading and identification, and applications of LGDs across jewellery and industrial segments, while preparing learners for technical roles, entrepreneurship and research opportunities within the LGD ecosystem.
Officials indicated that the signing serves as a precursor to a formal launch planned during IIJS Tritiya in Bengaluru, where the collaboration will be presented in greater detail. The initiative is expected to support workforce development and position India as a global hub for LGD technology, innovation and education.
